Layers is a renovation of and addition to a historic Queen Anne cottage that was once home to the local mason’s union. The masons wrapped the structure in industrial brick – one of many past layers that, together with these new interventions, reveal the site’s history and transformation. Changes to the ~1890’s original structure and new additions all respond to 4th and Gill Neighborhood Design Guidelines and the Secretary of Interior’s guidance with respect to modifications to historically significant buildings. We adopted a “fabric-first” approach, retaining and repairing a majority of the structure and shell while using bold interventions to celebrate the juxtaposition of new and old. The result is a home that has been made newly relevant for the 21st century – compact, functional, and adaptable. The reconstructed front porch and rear gable addition play on historic themes of the Queen Anne style while avoiding mimicry. The project includes a ground level ADU with its own entry that can be used for guests, an aging parent, or as a short-term rental. The landscape is an integral part of the design, rehabilitating a forlorn lawn into a gathering space and parking area with charging station.
